How to become Aspengrove Counsellor
We usually select from previous campers, but also take applications from other students who have some experience with horses and children.
- Everyone selected must be at least 16 years old.
- We require a 5 week commitment, either the first half of the summer or the last half. Of course you can stay the full 10 weeks if you desire.
- Everyone is on a 2 week trial period.
- The first year is all about learning the program and is on a volunteer basis. If all goes well and you are chosen to return the next year, we again expect a commitment of at least half the summer.
- Included in this volunteer position is free room and board. Free board for your horse if you have one to bring. If you do not have your own horse you can use one of ours that is not being used for the camp. Also included are 2 riding lessons per week and riding during your evening free time and weekends. When you return for the paid position, we deduct the cost of riding lessons, charge a minimal board charge for the horse and a minimal charge for your room and board.
- Hours are 8 – 4:30 per day.
- Once or twice a week you are required to help with the evening activities.
- Once or twice a week you are kitchen helper.
- Some weekend work is required.
- Balance of time you are a tack up assistant and help in looking after the welfare of the horses. Example - Fly spraying, sun screening, treating any ailments that come up as well as making up and feeding special grains and supplements.
